Solar systems have no moving parts, but that does not mean they never need attention. Dust, heat and time slowly reduce output. A little regular care keeps your system performing and catches problems early.
Why harmattan matters
During harmattan, fine dust settles on panels and blocks sunlight. A dirty panel produces less power, and uneven dirt can reduce output more than you would expect. Cleaning after heavy dust is one of the cheapest ways to recover performance.
How to clean panels safely
- Clean in the early morning or evening when panels are cool.
- Use clean water and a soft brush or sponge. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive scrubbers.
- Never spray cold water on very hot glass.
- Do not walk on panels, and do not climb a roof without proper safety measures. If access is difficult or dangerous, ask a technician.
A simple maintenance checklist
Every month
- Check the inverter display for alarms or error codes.
- Note your daily production if your inverter shows it. A sudden drop is a warning sign.
Every three to six months
- Clean the panels.
- Look for shade from new trees, buildings or antennas.
- Check that cables are not damaged and that nothing is loose or overheating.
Every year
- Have a technician inspect connectors, earthing, surge protection and fuses.
- Run a battery health check.
- Tighten and inspect mounting hardware.
Signs something is wrong
- Output drops noticeably with no change in weather
- The inverter shows repeated faults
- Batteries run out much faster than before
- Burning smells, hot cables or buzzing sounds. Switch off safely and call a technician right away.
Battery care
Lithium batteries need little attention, but keep them in a cool, dry, ventilated place and make sure the inverter's charge settings match the battery type. Lead-acid batteries need more care, including keeping terminals clean and, for some types, checking water levels.
