Why switch

Solar vs. generator and unreliable grid power

Generator fuel, servicing, noise and fumes add up month after month. Solar moves most of that cost into a one-time investment.

Generator and grid only

  • Ongoing fuel and servicing costs
  • Noise, fumes and fuel storage risks
  • Power cuts when fuel runs out or the grid drops
  • Costs rise whenever fuel prices rise

Solar + battery with Big Dave Solar

  • Free daytime energy from the sun
  • Silent, clean, automatic switchover
  • Battery keeps you on through the night and outages
  • Expandable: add panels or batteries later

System sizes

What size solar system do you need?

Indicative ranges only. Your exact system depends on your appliances, hours of use and roof space, which is why we survey first.

Questions

Solar in Nigeria: frequently asked questions

How much does a solar system cost in Nigeria?

The cost depends on your daily energy use. A small home system for lights, fans, TV and a fridge costs far less than one that also runs air conditioners and a freezer. Battery capacity and inverter size drive most of the price. Big Dave Solar gives a free, itemised quote after a site survey so you only pay for what you need.

What size solar system do I need for my home?

Add up the watts of the appliances you want to run and the hours you use them each day. A typical 2 to 3 bedroom home with fans, lights, TV and a fridge often needs a 3 to 5 kVA inverter, 5 to 10 kWh of lithium battery and 6 to 12 panels. Homes with air conditioners need more. Use the load calculator on this site for a starting estimate.

Can solar run an air conditioner in Nigeria?

Yes, but air conditioners use a lot of power, so the inverter, batteries and panels must be sized for them. Inverter-type (variable speed) ACs are much easier to run on solar than older fixed-speed units.

How long do solar panels, inverters and batteries last?

Quality solar panels commonly last 25 years or more. Inverters typically last 8 to 15 years. Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries commonly last 3,000 to 6,000 charge cycles, roughly 8 to 15 years of daily use.

Does solar work in the rainy season or harmattan?

Yes. Panels still produce on cloudy days, just less. Systems are sized with seasonal variation in mind, and a battery plus an optional generator or grid input covers the lowest-sun days. Clean panels after harmattan dust.

Do I still need a generator after installing solar?

Often no, or only rarely. A correctly sized system can cover most or all of your needs. Many customers keep a generator or grid connection as a backup, and a hybrid inverter switches between sources automatically.
