Lithium vs Lead-Acid Batteries for Solar: Which Should You Buy?

A fair comparison of lithium (LiFePO4) and lead-acid batteries on lifespan, usable capacity, maintenance and real cost over time.

The battery is usually the biggest single cost in a home solar system, and the choice between lithium and lead-acid affects how long it lasts and how it behaves. Here is how they compare in everyday use.

Quick comparison

Lithium (LiFePO4) Lead-acid (tubular / gel / AGM)
Typical cycle life About 3,000 to 6,000 cycles Often a few hundred to around 1,500 cycles
Usable capacity Around 80% or more Often limited to about 50% for long life
Maintenance None Some types need topping up
Weight Light Heavy
Upfront price Higher Lower
Charging speed Fast Slower

Figures are typical ranges. Always check the manufacturer's datasheet and warranty for the exact model.

Why usable capacity matters

A 5 kWh lead-acid battery that you only discharge to 50% gives you about 2.5 kWh of everyday energy. A 5 kWh lithium battery used to 80% gives you about 4 kWh. That means you may need a much larger lead-acid bank to get the same usable energy.

Cost over time

Lead-acid looks cheaper on the day you buy it. But if it needs replacing several times while a lithium battery keeps working, lithium is often the cheaper option over the life of the system. The longer you plan to keep the system, the stronger the case for lithium.

When lead-acid can still make sense

  • Very tight budget with a small system and light use
  • Short-term setups you plan to replace soon
  • Existing systems where the inverter only supports lead-acid chemistry

What to check before buying either type

  1. Inverter compatibility. Make sure the inverter supports the battery chemistry and voltage.
  2. Built-in protection. Good lithium batteries include a battery management system (BMS).
  3. Warranty terms. Look at the number of cycles and years covered.
  4. Installation quality. Correct cable size, fusing and ventilation matter for both types.

The bottom line

If you can afford it, lithium is usually the better long-term choice. If you cannot, size a lead-acid system carefully and plan for replacement. Either way, the right size matters more than the brand name. Read our guide on how to size a solar system before you buy.
