Air conditioners are the heaviest everyday load in most Nigerian homes. Solar can run them, but only if the system is designed for it from the start.
Why air conditioners change everything
A 1 hp split unit can draw roughly 750 to 1,000 W while running, and more at startup. Run it for six hours and you have used around 4.5 to 6 kWh in a single day, which can be more than all your other appliances combined.
Inverter-type vs fixed-speed ACs
Inverter (variable speed) ACs ramp their compressor up and down, so they draw less power and have gentler startup. They are much easier to run on solar.
Fixed-speed ACs switch the compressor fully on and off and create a large startup surge. They need a bigger inverter to start reliably.
If you are buying a new AC and plan to use solar, an inverter-type unit is usually the smarter choice.
What the system needs
For each 1 hp AC running about six hours a day, plan on roughly:
- Inverter: enough capacity for the AC plus everything else running at the same time, with headroom for startup
- Battery: more storage if you want to cool at night
- Panels: around 1 to 2 kW of additional panels, depending on hours and sunshine
These are planning figures. Your exact needs depend on the unit's rating, room size and how you use it.
Ways to cut the cost
- Use the AC mostly in the daytime so panels power it directly instead of the battery.
- Choose an inverter-type AC with a good efficiency rating.
- Improve the room. Shade, insulation and closing doors reduce running time.
- Set the temperature sensibly. Each degree lower costs more energy.
- Start with one AC and design the system so you can add more later.
Should you do it?
If daytime cooling is your priority, solar is an excellent fit because the sun is strongest when you need cooling most. If you want all-night cooling, expect a larger battery bank and a higher budget.
